TikTok Shop's 'Sell Across EU' Goes Live 19 October: What UK Sellers Must Do Now

UK sellers on TikTok Shop get a single-registration route into 12 EU markets from 19 October - but the compliance bill is steeper than the feature makes it look.

One Button, Twelve Markets, a Lot of Small Print

TikTok Shop announced yesterday that its Sell Across EU feature will open to all eligible UK sellers on 19 October 2026, with a closed pilot kicking off on 21 September for a selected cohort. The news, first reported by ChannelX, lands as the platform spans 12 European markets and pushes hard to convert its content-discovery flywheel into a durable marketplace business.

The proposition is straightforward on paper. UK sellers who are already active, meaning a shop open and sales recorded in the last 30 days, can list products across Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Austria, Greece, Portugal, and Hungary through a single seller dashboard, without separate country-by-country onboarding.

That is a meaningful operational lift. Anyone who has dealt with Amazon's EU marketplace setup knows the pain of per-country registration queues. TikTok is betting that collapsing that friction will pull in the long tail of UK SMB sellers who looked at European expansion and baulked at the admin.

The Fee Reality Check

Before founders reprice their entire catalogue in celebration, a quick margin audit is in order.

TikTok Shop raised EU commissions from 5% to 9% in January 2026 across its original five markets, mirroring what it did to UK sellers in September 2024. The UK rate now also sits at 9%, with electronics getting a partial reprieve at 7%. EU sellers pay a 2% transaction fee on every order, and returns carry a 20% admin charge on the original referral fee, capped at €5 per unit. Commission is calculated on a base that includes net sales, customer-paid shipping, and platform discounts, not just the sticker price. That last point trips up plenty of operators who model 9% on product price alone and discover the real take-rate is wider.

New sellers joining after the October launch get a 60-day introductory rate of 4%, activated by completing a short onboarding mission: upload five products within 15 days. Useful for testing, not a long-term plan.

VAT and GPSR: The Compliance Iceberg

The single-registration feature simplifies platform onboarding. It does not simplify tax law.

Sell Across EU removes neither per-country VAT registration obligations nor product compliance requirements. A seller shipping from a UK fulfilment centre into Germany, France, and Poland needs separate business verification documents for each TikTok marketplace, even if they hold one VAT number under OSS. TikTok acts as deemed supplier for B2C VAT in many cross-border scenarios, but if a seller stores stock inside EU fulfilment locations, their own VAT obligations remain live regardless. Product categories approved on UK TikTok Shop may also require additional compliance documentation or attribute information before going live in EU markets, a detail worth checking before 21 September if you are hoping to join the pilot.

Then there is GPSR. Sellers need a named EU Responsible Person under the General Product Safety Regulation before listing physical goods in any EU market. This is the single most common compliance gap advisers report finding when reviewing brands ahead of a European platform entry.

The actual to-do list for an ambitious UK DTC brand: confirm active-seller status, audit fulfilment footprint, check OSS versus local VAT registration needs, appoint an EU Responsible Person, then verify product category eligibility market by market. Not impossible. Not a one-afternoon job either.

Brand Infrastructure Is the Bottleneck

The timing of this launch reveals something that trademark data flags clearly. According to AIBD analysis of IPO data, UK Class 35 trademark filings, the class covering retail and e-commerce services and the natural protection layer for any brand expanding onto a new marketplace, came in at just 8,388 in Q3 2026, down 22.2% on the prior period. That is a sharp fall in a quarter when at least one major new sales channel is opening its doors to UK sellers.

A brand entering 12 EU markets on TikTok Shop without registered trade mark protection is doing something the Victorian industrialists would have recognised: opening a shop on a busy high street and neglecting to put your name above the door. Competitors, including the wave of Chinese cross-border sellers already embedded on the platform, move fast on unprotected brand names in new territories.

TikTok Shop's discovery model, entertainment first and purchase intent second, rewards brands with recognisable names and consistent visual identity. That is exactly what a registered mark protects. The Q3 filing dip suggests many of the UK SMBs now looking at the October launch date have not yet sorted the foundations.

The Bigger Picture

Triple-digit daily GMV growth across TikTok's original EU markets between August 2025 and February 2026 is the number TikTok keeps citing, and it has earned the right to cite it. Spain became the platform's sixteenth-largest online retailer by GMV within 18 months of launch; Germany reached fifteenth even faster. Sell Across EU is TikTok's attempt to scale that trajectory by reducing the friction that kept mid-market UK sellers watching from the sidelines.

The platform is also clearly past its subsidised honeymoon phase. Fees are at Amazon-comparable levels, compliance requirements are real, and the brands winning are those with clean unit economics, not just viral content. The October launch is an opportunity. Whether it becomes a margin disaster depends almost entirely on the prep work done before the pilot opens on 21 September.
