TikTok Shop's Beauty Blitz Leaves Most UK Sellers Without a Brand to Protect

New data confirms TikTok Shop is now challenging for the top spot in UK beauty retail. But almost all the online sellers rushing onto the platform have no trademark in place - and the platform itself flags registered marks as a gateway to better protection and priority verification.

The numbers that should unsettle every beauty DTC founder

TikTok Shop is no longer a sideshow in UK beauty. According to a report by the consultancy Public First, commissioned by TikTok, the platform recorded 60% year-on-year beauty growth in 2025 and has climbed to become one of the UK's top-two beauty retailers by some measures. Retail Gazette and the TikTok newsroom cited a fourth-place ranking based on earlier data; BeautyMatter's July 2026 analysis cited a Public First figure now putting it second. The exact league-table position depends on the measurement window, but the direction is not in dispute.

The same Public First report estimated that TikTok's UK activity generated at least £10bn in gross value added during 2025 and sustained 153,000 jobs. The platform is also projecting a further £27bn contribution to the UK economy by 2030. That is serious economic infrastructure, not a novelty channel.

How the platform sells beauty

The growth engine is not keyword search. It is what TikTok calls its "discovery-first" model: shoppers arrive without a specific product in mind and move through a search-learn-buy arc driven by creators, skin-concern content, and live sessions. Beauty-focused LIVE shopping sessions grew 90% in 2025, with the platform hosting more than 6,000 LIVE sessions per day in the UK alone. K-Beauty has been the standout category: searches for Korean skincare surged 125%, and the average K-Beauty basket value runs nearly 35% above the overall skincare average.

At peak, beauty products were selling at five units every two seconds. That velocity is what makes brand identity so fragile. A single creator video can turn an unknown product into a recognisable name overnight, and just as quickly expose that name to counterfeiters.

The younger cohort is already there

Nearly half of UK Gen Z and millennial shoppers (47%, per a Savvy survey of 1,005 UK consumers) have used TikTok Shop to browse or buy in the past three months. That compares with just 21% of UK shoppers overall. Among that younger cohort, 64% have watched product reviews or recommendations on social media in the past month, and 57% say they enjoy live shopping events. Social commerce is now the primary retail channel for a large slice of 18-to-35 buyers.

The protection gap nobody is talking about

The brands flooding onto TikTok Shop and other online channels are doing so almost entirely unprotected.

AI Business Dispatch analysis of Companies House and IPO data shows that 5,213 new SIC 47.91 (internet retail) companies were incorporated in Q3 2026, down 70.5% on the prior period: a sharp correction in new company formation that likely reflects tighter credit conditions and post-pandemic normalisation. Yet even accounting for that slowdown, the protection problem persists across the existing base. Class 35 UK trademark filings in Q3 2026 came in at 3,526, down 67.4% on the prior period. More starkly, 94.6% of active SIC 47.91 companies hold no Class 35 trademark whatsoever. (Source: AIBD analysis of Companies House (MC) and IPO (TMD) data, as of July 2026.)

Class 35 covers retail services and is the registration most directly relevant to an online shop trading under a brand name. Without it, a seller has no formal basis to challenge a copycat shop using a similar name on TikTok or any other marketplace.

The platform's own rules make this urgent

TikTok Shop UK is explicit on this point. Its seller guidance notes that brands with existing trademark registrations receive priority verification and access to brand protection tools within the platform. Sellers without a registered mark can still open a shop, but they are operating without the enforcement lever the platform itself makes available. TikTok Shop UK's brand authorisation system accepts Nice Classification (NCL) classes 1 to 35, meaning the standard retail and services trademark categories map directly onto the platform's own compliance framework.

A platform doing billions in UK beauty GMV has built its brand integrity architecture around trademark registration. The vast majority of the sellers on it have not filed one.

So what do you actually do?

The mechanics are not complicated. A UK trademark application with the IPO costs £170 for one class online, and most small brands need Class 35 (retail services) plus the product class: Class 3 for cosmetics, Class 25 for apparel. Turnaround from filing to registration is typically four to six months if unopposed. The platform's brand authorisation process then becomes a competitive advantage rather than a box-ticking exercise; verified sellers get the Official Shop badge, signalling to consumers that the shop is the brand's only authorised representative on TikTok.

Five products every two seconds means five windows every two seconds for a copycat to undercut, confuse, or piggyback on a brand that took months to build. Founders who treat IP as a back-office task are learning, often expensively, that on a discovery-first platform, the brand is the product.
