TikTok Shop Muscles Into UK's Top Beauty Tier - and Half of Young Shoppers Are Already There
New research confirms TikTok Shop has vaulted to the UK's second-largest beauty retailer, posting 60% year-on-year growth - while nearly half of Gen Z and millennial shoppers have used it in the past three months. The brands that haven't sorted their trademark yet are about to get burned.

Beauty's discovery engine has officially become a checkout machine.
According to a report by Public First, TikTok Shop has grown 60% year over year to become the UK's second-largest beauty retailer, reflecting a broader shift in consumer behaviour as entertainment, education, and commerce converge within a single platform. That figure deserves a moment. Boots has been a British retail institution since 1849. It now has company.
The wider economic story is just as stark. The report, produced by Public First and commissioned by TikTok, estimated that activity on the platform generated at least £10bn in gross value added during 2025 and sustained 153,000 jobs, combining economic modelling from EY with surveys of 4,158 UK adults, 1,034 businesses and 336 creators. The report also claimed TikTok could contribute a further £27bn to the UK economy by 2030 as more businesses use the platform to reach customers, work with creators and sell products directly.
Younger Shoppers Have Already Moved
Nearly half (47%) of Gen Z and millennial shoppers have used TikTok Shop to browse or buy products in the past three months, compared with just 21% of UK shoppers overall, according to research from retail and shopper marketing agency Savvy, carried out across 1,005 UK shoppers. Social commerce is no longer an emerging channel but a growing force reshaping how younger consumers discover and buy products.
Live shopping is the accelerant. Savvy's May 2026 Shopper Panel found that 57% of Gen Y and Z shoppers enjoy watching live shopping events such as TikTok Live, while 66% said seeing products sell out or go viral makes them more likely to buy. That second number is the one that should keep brand managers up at night. Scarcity plus social proof, delivered in real time, to a captive audience on mobile. It's QVC reimagined for people who've never owned a television.
Beauty-focused LIVE shopping sessions grew 90% in 2025, with TikTok Shop now hosting more than 6,000 LIVE shopping sessions every day in the UK, enabling real-time dialogue between brands, creators and consumers. The category breakdown matters for anyone thinking about what to stock or launch. Globally, beauty and personal care leads with 22.5% of GMV, followed by womenswear and lingerie at 12.5%, health and wellness, consumer electronics accessories, homeware, food and supplements.
28% of businesses using TikTok say they have sold out of a product because of the effects of TikTok and TikTok Shop. Selling out sounds great until you realise you have no inventory plan and your supplier lead time is six weeks.
The Search-Learn-Buy Loop Replacing Intent Search
This is where the platform fundamentally differs from Amazon or Google. Growth has been fuelled by TikTok Shop's discovery-first model, which enables shoppers to move seamlessly from inspiration and education to purchase, often beginning their search without a specific product or brand in mind. Rather than searching by brand, TikTok Shop users are increasingly shopping via a search-learn-buy flow, focusing on skin concern, routine and ingredient.
For DTC operators, that behavioural shift creates both an opportunity and a trap. The opportunity: a brand with zero awareness can get cold-started by the right creator. An estimated 1.8 million young adults say TikTok is their main source of beauty and fashion recommendations. The trap: if your product gets discovered but your brand name isn't protected, you're building someone else's equity.
The Trademark Gap That Keeps Getting Wider
This is the part the TikTok deck won't show you.
AI Business Dispatch analysis of Companies House and IPO data shows that 4,258 new SIC 47.91 (online retail) companies were incorporated in Q3 2026, down 75.9% versus the prior period, as the formation frenzy that followed the pandemic continues to normalise. Class 35 UK trademark filings tell the same story from the brand protection side: just 3,011 were filed in Q3 2026, a 72.1% decline. Critically, 94.6% of active SIC 47.91 companies hold no Class 35 trademark at all. Source: AIBD analysis of Companies House (MC) and IPO (TMD) data, as of 2026-07.
Class 35 covers retail services and advertising. It is the one trademark class that most directly protects what a TikTok Shop seller does every single day. Selling out is not a brand strategy. Going viral without a registered mark is just free R&D for whoever decides to copy you.
TikTok now has more than 30 million monthly active users in the UK, more than a third of whom are aged 35 or over, meaning this isn't a youth-media niche anymore. It's a mainstream retail channel. The brands treating it like an experiment will find that the operators treating it like infrastructure have already taken the shelf.
What Operators Should Do Monday Morning
Every winner in 2026 treats TikTok Shop like a broadcast channel, not a catalogue upload. The algorithm rewards broadcasters and punishes uploaders. That means consistent shoppable content (minimum three to five videos per week), plus live sessions, and someone on camera who can actually sell. Founders who are camera-shy need to find an ambassador or a creator partner fast.
On the margin side, the inventory risk is real. The competitive advantage is shifting from who can afford the best planning infrastructure to who can act on better insights faster, with AI tools now allowing DTC brands to run scenario analysis in natural language, asking questions like "If I only have £100,000 to spend on inventory, what should I cut from this order?" and getting actionable answers in minutes.
File the trademark. You've built a following, you've got a name people search for, and 94.6% of online retailers in your cohort haven't done it. That's not a competitive landscape. That's an open door.
Beauty sold one product per second on TikTok Shop at its peak. The platform will keep the clock running whether you're ready or not.
