Olay Bets on Live Commerce: Kelly Rowland TikTok Shop UK Launch Signals Mass-Market Pivot

Procter & Gamble's Olay has opened its first dedicated UK TikTok Shop and named Grammy winner Kelly Rowland as global ambassador: a dual move that tells you where mass-market skincare thinks its next conversion engine lives.

The campaign launched 27 August, with Rowland fronting a push for the Super Collection, a 5-in-1 multi-benefit serum range that had already become the number-one-selling serum at Boots UK after going viral on its original drop. The brand is not chasing virality this time. It is building infrastructure.

The Live Commerce Bet

On 10 September, Rowland will host a live shopping event to formally open Olay UK's TikTok Shop, with consumers able to discover and buy her selected Super Collection routine without leaving their feeds. A Reddit AMA runs the same day, giving the brand two distinct formats in one activation: impulse-conversion on TikTok, longer-form trust-building on Reddit. It is a tidy two-channel play that most heritage beauty brands still haven't managed to pull off.

The Super Collection is already stocked nationwide through Boots, Superdrug, Amazon, Sainsbury's and Tesco. Adding a dedicated TikTok Shop is not about distribution breadth. It is about closing the loop between content and checkout at the moment of peak engagement.

That loop is increasingly valuable. TikTok Shop posted 60% year-on-year growth in UK beauty sales in 2025, cementing its position as the UK's fourth-largest beauty retailer. Beauty-focused live shopping broadcasts grew 90% in the same period, with the platform now hosting more than 6,000 live shopping sessions every day in the UK. The platform's own data suggests 28% of UK businesses using it sold out of a product directly as a result of TikTok or TikTok Shop activity, which is the kind of stat that ends procurement-team arguments fast.

Why Rowland, Why Now

Olay's UK&I Brand Director, Jenny Lundie, told Cosmetics Business that the partnership was "rooted in real authenticity," a phrase that normally makes brand editors reach for the delete key, but which has some actual substance here. Rowland had been using the Super Serum in her own routine before any contract was signed, a detail Olay has leaned into hard. The appointment builds on that credibility rather than manufacturing it.

There is also a market-timing angle. TikTok Shop is maturing. The brands that rode the algorithmic early-adopter wave in 2023 and 2024 built creator networks, review velocity and algorithm history that new entrants now have to fight against. A heritage P&G brand pairing a recognisable global celebrity with a live commerce slot is one of the few plays that can compress that deficit quickly. You can't replicate six months of creator momentum overnight, but you can buy a prime-time slot and fill it with someone the algorithm already knows how to surface.

Rowland's brief extends beyond September. The ambassador role is positioned to take in ongoing campaign activity, building on a pop-up events programme Olay ran in July: the Olay Solarium sun-safety activation across shopping centres in Manchester, London and Kent.

The Broader Market Read

This launch sits inside a live commerce land-grab that is moving fast. AIM-listed Huddled Group, the circular economy e-commerce business, struck a joint venture with Cipher, one of the UK's leading TikTok agencies, to operate Peeko Live Commerce channels across TikTok Live and TikTok Auctions. Under the deal, Cipher provides presenters and studios while Huddled supplies stock and fulfilment, with a 50/50 profit split. That's a structural bet on the same channel dynamic: turn content expertise and retail infrastructure into a single, scalable live-selling machine.

More than 300,000 UK small businesses now sell through TikTok Shop. Research from Savvy's May 2026 Shopper Panel found that 57% of Gen Z and millennial shoppers enjoyed watching live shopping events. These are not fringe numbers anymore.

The Trademark Gap Nobody Talks About

Here is the wrinkle that doesn't make the press releases. As brands race onto TikTok Shop, brand protection is lagging. UK Class 25 trademark filings, covering apparel and fashion goods, a category directly relevant to beauty-adjacent DTC brands selling lifestyle and brand-extension merch, dropped to just 3,672 in Q3 2026, a 30.5% decline versus the prior period, according to AIBD analysis of IPO (TMD) data as of September 2026. That is a significant fall at exactly the moment when live commerce is making brand identity more exposed, not less.

TikTok Shop does not mandate a registered trademark to open a storefront. But without one, a brand that goes viral has almost no enforceable lever to pull against copycat shops or counterfeit listings. Class 3 (cosmetics) and Class 35 (retail services) filings matter here too, and the same soft-filing environment applies. Olay doesn't have this problem; P&G has had this covered for decades. The risk sits with the smaller DTC operators piling onto the platform on the back of a single viral moment, hoping brand equity alone will protect them.

The live commerce channel is real, the growth is real, and Olay's move is the right call for a brand that needs to own the full-funnel conversation. But if you're building a skincare brand on TikTok Shop right now and you haven't filed yet, you're building on sand.

The 10 September live event is the one to watch.
